Surgical Technologists assist surgeons and RNs in the operating room, helping ensure quality patient care during various procedures. In this role, you will perform many tasks, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. Surgery would not be possible if not for your efforts and support.
A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 3:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Monitor, direct and oversee the activities of assigned Surgical Technologists in the OR.
- Perform duties of a Surgical Technologist as needed.
- Provide patient care in the OR by performing in a scrub role.
- Assist in the circulating role as needed.
- Collaborate with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays.
- Provide performance documentation.
- Assume department leadership in the absence of the supervisor.
- Review surgical schedules and service line shift reports daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.
- Seek ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain workflow and improve service.
- Perform and oversee precepting.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
- Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES OR completion of Military Surgical Technology Program OR Surgical Technologist Certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- One year of experience in a Surgical Technologist role for internal applicants
- Two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role for external applicants

- Full range of body motion
- Lifting and bearing the weight of 100 pounds with assistance
- Pulling, lifting, pushing and transferring patients to and from various apparatus
- Pushing moderate to heavy weight of 100 pounds or more
- Potential exposure to body fluids
- Availability for flexible scheduling according to the needs of the surgical area
- Floating per assignment policies within the surgical support department
