Skill Development Center

Welcome to our Skill Development Center! Cleveland Clinic has built its mission upon several values, including quality and safety, empathy, teamwork, integrity, inclusion and innovation. At Cleveland Clinic, all employees — clinical and non-clinical — are considered caregivers. Our values are attributes that we feel every caregiver should embody, in order to fulfill Cleveland Clinic’s promise of being the best place to receive care and the best place to work in healthcare.

To help future caregivers prepare for an interview and improve their qualifications for positions at Cleveland Clinic, we have created the following skill-building modules. Informed by our Cleveland Clinic Learning Culture, these are designed to help you succeed in your career goals.

Learning Culture

At Cleveland Clinic, we believe in Lifelong Learning, which is supported by our organization’s Learning Culture. Our Learning Culture guides how we learn and grow throughout our careers and is defined by 4 essential behaviors:

  • Learning from others
  • Sharing knowledge
  • Supporting change; and
  • Growing in your career

By embracing these behaviors, we continue to develop skills that help us live our Cleveland Clinic Values through our daily actions.

About our Skills

Click here to access our available modules, at no cost to you, and start your journey learning in the Cleveland Clinic way. After you finish a module and earn your completion badge, we recommend adding this new skill to your resume and encourage you to share your experience during the interview process, whether it’s with Cleveland Clinic or another healthcare organization.

The purpose of these courses is to help you develop key skills that Cleveland Clinic caregivers have identified as those used to develop and effectively thrive in their careers.

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in another person’s shoes — to see things from their point of view, and to understand their feelings, desires, ideas and actions. Empathy is how we show others that we care.

Problem solving involves finding and creating solutions to difficult or complex issues, whether it’s an unexpected problem or a common management-level obstacle. Planning out solutions is a vital skill.

Collaboration, or working effectively with others toward a common goal, brings many benefits: more creativity, diversity and inclusion; greater efficiency when working as a team; and a stronger sense of teamwork with fellow caregivers.

An important part of collaboration is clear communication, both verbal and written. In addition to increasing productivity, clear communication reduces errors and strengthens relationships with fellow caregivers.

Adaptability is the ability to adjust to new work conditions and expectations. When you are able to face challenges as they arise, you become a better problem-solver, and more valuable to your employer.

Active Listening is exactly what it sounds like — actively paying attention, absorbing and retaining what is being said by others. Among other benefits, Active Listening “slows” your brain down, improves empathy with fellow caregivers, and builds trust.
