Responsibilities:
- Receives and accessions specimens into the LIS.
- Retrieves, sorts, tracks and delivers specimens.
- Verifies accurate documentation relative to specimen processing.
- Accepts or rejects specimens according to established standards and performs specimen investigation procedures to resolve lab specimen issues or problems.
- Prepares specimens for analysis.
- Performs manual processing (centrifuge, aliquoting, and routine maintenance.Â
- Maintains patient, specimen and tracking data using laboratory computer system, tracking and software/devices.
- Communicates and documents essential information.
- Performs preventive maintenance and record keeping procedures.
- Performs basic clerical functions and places work orders.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- Associate’s degree preferred (preferably in Science)
- Associate's degree (or equivalent credit hours) will substitute for up to one year of experience.
Certifications:
- None required.
Complexity of Work:
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Requires strong organizational and time management skills.
Work Experience:
- One year of lab experience is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform specimen handling techniques and take measurements.
- Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
- Ability to move throughout the department and hospital system.
- Handles and transports biohazardous materials and potential carcinogens.
- Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation, and tones.
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.

- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
