Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Department Â

A caregiver in this position works 7:00pm – 7:30am. Â
A caregiver who excels in this role will:Â Â

Complete Emergency Department Assessment Data Base upon patient arrival, inclusive of psychosocial, educational and age specific needs of patient/family.Â

Complete ongoing assessments according to departmental/unit policies and recognize significant changes in patient condition.Â
-
Initiate an individualized plan of care based on assessment of patient needs and Emergency Department standards of care.Â
-
Include plan for appropriate teaching for patient/family.Â
-
Review individualized plan of care and goals with patient/family.Â
-
Review and document care and discharge goals with physician and patient/family.Â
-
Maintain a safe, comfortable environment for patients.Â
-
Accurately administer and document IVs and medications according to established standards of care and policies and procedures.Â
-
Appropriately intervene when changes in patient condition occur.Â
-
Provide individualized and timely interventions in accordance with age specific needs and Department of Nursing/hospital policy.Â
-
Accurately document nursing interventions and patient responses, in accordance with policy.Â
-
Serve as patient/family advocate to facilitate patient care, communication, and resolution of problems and ethical dilemmas.Â
-
Evaluate current interventions and responses to plan of care.Â
-
Evaluate and modify plan of care as necessary, based on assessment by other disciplines and of the patient response to nursing interventions and established age specific standards of care/expected patient outcomes.Â

Demonstrate flexibility in providing care as individual patient care and unit needs change.Â
-
Establish priorities for delivery of patient care to individual patients and for assigned groups of patients.Â

Participate in and document discharge planning.Â
-
Communicate information in shift and unit reports regarding patient plan of care and current outcomes.Â
-
Using appropriate chain of command, communicate information in a timely fashion to the Director, physician, or Nursing Coordinator regarding changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues.Â

Utilize research findings in clinical practice and/or participate in research activities.Â
-
Assign/delegate appropriate patient care activities to other nursing caregivers based on patient needs and skill level/qualifications of staff members.Â
-
Function in triage nurse positions according to established Emergency Department policy.Â
-
Care for patients and family members during emergency or crisis situations in a calm and professional manner. Â
-
Provide appropriate care for alleged rape/sexual assault and/or geriatric abuse victims utilizing established Emergency Department protocols.Â
-
Initiate appropriate community referral for patients and families.Â
-
Interact in a professional manner with law enforcement, paramedics and other pre-hospital care personnel.Â
-
Function in flow manager role according to Emergency Department policy.Â
-
Assist in the orientation of registered nurses and other hospital personnel.Â
-
Participate in clinical instruction programs to provide learning experiences for students.Â
-
Share knowledge and expertise by participating in in-services and patient care conferences.Â
-
Attend unit meetings, nursing grand rounds, and in-services/conferences identified or required for maintaining clinical competence.Â
-
Serve on committees within the Department of Nursing, participate in nursing grand rounds presentations, and remain aware of activities of shared governance councils.Â
-
Demonstrate an understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.Â
-
Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Â
-
Maintain applicable certification/licensure. Â
-
Maintain BLS and ACLS. Â
-
Obtain TNCC certification within one year of appointment and maintain currency.Â
-
Maintain competencies specific to patient population served.Â
-
Satisfactorily complete AGMC RN and critical care orientation programs and Critical Care course.Â
-
Satisfactorily complete/pass all mandated programs as required by policy and unit-based competencies/skills as required.Â
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:Â Â

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing that provides clinical expertise under the supervision of qualified faculty. Â

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio. Â
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Â
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:Â Â

Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Â
