Responsibilities:
- Performs daily health observations and monitors the condition of research animals.
- Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures.
- Receives animal shipments and completes required documentation.
- Ensures that areas used for technical procedures are well maintained and adequately supplied.
- Transports supplies, equipment and animals to and from various locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the department.

- None required
Complexity of Work:
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to make quick decisions, identify options and take appropriate action.
- Must be flexible and complete the job before leaving work. Animal care is a 7-days per week, 365-days per year job.
Work Experience:
- Experience in the custodial care of animals preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and transport equipment and/or animals weighing up to 75 pounds using carts with casters.
- Capable of tolerating a significant amount of standing, bending and walking.
- May be required to work with biological, chemical and radiation hazards after proper training

- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
