As a Pharmacy Tech Medication Access Coordinator you’ll play an essential role in helping patients receive timely, convenient access to the medications they need. You’ll work in busy inpatient and outpatient settings, assisting physicians and nurses as they build the most effective care plans. Your primary duties include:  

• Assisting outpatient pharmacies with their workload.  

• Conducting medication histories on newly admitted patients.  

• Coordinating medications for patients upon discharge.  

• Helping caregivers and patients find cost-effective medication options.  

• Performing cost estimates on patients’ medications upon request.   

The ideal future caregiver:

• Has previous retail pharmacy experience.  

• Is detail-oriented and precise. 

• Multitasks and works efficiently.  

• Stays calm in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates care with a multi-disciplinary team, communicates directly with patients and caregivers in the course of performing technical functions within the assigned work area to ensure timely and accurate procurement of prescriptions and documentation within the electronic medical record when required. 
  • Identifies potential medication-related access problems and works with patients and the multi-disciplinary team to solve these problems in an efficient and patient-centered manner.
  • Coordinates education, bedside medication delivery, and medication payment.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of policies, procedures to ensure a seamless medication-related procurement process for patients.
  • Works with the pharmacy leadership teams to identify areas of opportunity for improved patient experience. Assists manager in creating, implementing and monitoring quality control programs in assigned area.
  • Conducts third party prior authorization requests when needed.
  • Responsible for program performance in assigned care area, including patient volumes served and patient experience indicators, serving as a valued resource to identify discharge prescription coverage issues and assist in their resolution.
  • Builds positive working relationships and communicates with other caregivers and patients in an effective and positive manner.  Demonstrates emotional control and intelligence in managing work relationships. Attends and actively participates in team huddles and meetings.  Assists with caregiver and student training. 
  • Completes medication histories or other transitional care activities as assigned per location.
  • Appropriately uses information systems, technology, and automation to complete assigned tasks.   
  • Performs all job responsibilities of inpatient or ambulatory pharmacy technician as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program preferred.

Certifications:

  • Upon hire, registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy is required. Candidate must be eligible for Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 6 months. 
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred at time of hire.  CPhT through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required within 18 months.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to communicate both verbal and written information to all administrative levels throughout the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a computer.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to identify and develop solutions applying appropriate pharmacy standards and policies.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum six months related pharmacy experience. 
  • Successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician Program may substitute for the required work experience.
  • Experience dealing with 3rd party insurance and prior authorization process preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing and walking for prolonged times, approximately 75% of shift and continuously for extended periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer and dispensing functions of the job.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Position often includes reaching, stretching, stooping, climbing steps and sitting.

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
