Outpatient Clinical Counselor – Neurological Institute

Under the direct guidance of the Supervisor, Chemical Dependency Services, the Clinical Counselor is responsible for planning and directing patient care at a competent level of counseling practice. Patient-first wellbeing is essential to our team.  

A caregiver in this position works 8:00AM – 4:30PM. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide patient assessment and individual and group counseling (excluding diagnosis).  
  • Assess patients' treatment needs, develop individualized care and implement treatment plans for patients within the available time frame. 
  • Recognize potential problems and the significance of abnormal findings when gathering data. 
  • Implement efficient, organized, timely, and cost-effective care, considering patient satisfaction.  
  • Revise and prioritize counseling activities and treatment plans as necessary. 
  • Evaluate and document the outcome of patient therapy, comparing patient responses to intended outcomes and changes care accordingly. 
  • Identify actual and potential risks to patients and others and initiate actions to eliminate or minimize the risk. 
  • Identify obvious barriers of communication, initiating appropriate interaction using effective communication principles and techniques. 
  • Document and report pertinent assessment data, counseling interventions and outcomes using approved forms in an accurate, complete, concise, organized, and legible manner according to counseling standards, policies and procedures. 
  • Recognize unexpected events, take appropriate action, and document events and outcomes according to established guidelines, offering crisis management when necessary. 
  • Perform joint problem solving and setting of mutual goals related to patient care in collaboration with physicians and counselors, and other members of the health care team to address individual patient care issues. 
  • Obtain timely authorization for initial and ongoing treatment from third party payors. 
  • Keep abreast of new and changing methods by maintaining and pursuing appropriate certifications and licensures. 
  • Follow hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety. 
  • Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional (LCDC), Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) 
  • Maintained competencies specific to patient population served 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • One year clinical experience in chemical dependency
