Martin North’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has a dedicated team of caregivers that provide the highest quality, family-centered care to ill neonate and extremely low birth weight infants. This unit provides 24-hour neonatology services, evidence-based nursing practice, and advanced respiratory care. A caregiver in this position works variable shifts, from 8:00am—4:00pm. Â
A caregiver who excels in this role will:Â Â

Perform pre-testing procedures including safe transport of newborns following protocol of hospital infant security system and identification, proper placement of sensor tabs and transducer of sound, and ensures proper equipment function, troubleshooting and reporting issues, as necessary. Â

Calm and comfort baby while test is being performed. Â

Monitor noise in environment of testing and adjust/modify/controls to reduce noise levels when necessary.Â

Perform hearing screening on all newborns and infants prior to their discharge in accordance with Florida Department of Health rules and facility protocol using the appropriate objective method:Â Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) and/or Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR).Â

Communicate the results of the screening(s) and follow up (if needed) to the patients' family in a confidential, culturally, and linguistically appropriate manner.Â

Provide test results and answers questions after extensive training by the Audiologist who serves as the coordinator.Â

Provide written documentation of results in accordance with the law to caregivers and primary care providers within appropriate timelines.Â

Document required information including quality assurance activities.Â

Follow policies and procedures regarding baby care within the work environment. Â

Escalate issues to the appropriate clinical function.Â
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:Â Â

High school diploma. Â

One year of experience in a hospital setting or working with infants. Â

OR Associate's or Bachelor's degree in an allied health field may offset experience requirementÂ

Physical Requirements

Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.

Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
