The 10-bed Neuroscience ICU (NSICU) at Akron General supports populations recovering from strokes, neurological traumas and other critical critical neuro-related concerns. As an RN on this team, you will assist fellow caregivers in delivering exceptional care, from initial introduction to final send-off. In this role, you will interact directly with patients, families and visitors, offering the opportunity to help them feel safe, supported and secure throughout treatment. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.
A caregiver in this position works weekend nights from 7:00PM – 7:30AM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide direct patient care.
- Complete ongoing assessments.
- Administer treatments and medications safely.
- Participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes and contribute to the improvement of care.
- Participates in the quality improvement processes.
- Delegate tasks/assignments to employees according to their ability and within the scope of their job.
- Serve as a resource person sharing knowledge/skills.
- Participate in and document patient care, discharge planning and case management conferences.
- Communicate information regarding patient plan of care, current outcomes and acuity at shift report.
- Communicate information to Director, physician or Nursing Coordinator regarding changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues.
- Participate in research activities.
- Demonstrate ability to perform Unit Coordinator responsibilities as assigned.
- Assists in orientation of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and other hospital personnel.
- Participate in clinical instruction programs to provide learning experiences for students.
- Serve on committees within the Department of Nursing, participate in nursing grand rounds presentations and remain aware of activities of shared governance councils.
- Ensure JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved as applicable to patient diagnosis.
- Complete all paper and electronic records related to the patient nursing care.
- Complete AGMC RN and Critical Care Unit Orientation Programs.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Ohio
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- One year of current ICU or acute care RN experience
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within one year of hire
- Completion of a TCAR/TNCC Certification through the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) within two years of hire
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
- Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
