As a Childbirth Educator Instructor, you will teach childbirth preparation classes at the Women’s Center to assist families in the transition to parenthood. Becoming a new parent or having another baby can be stressful, but your work can help ease worries related to birth and childcare. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones every day, while growing in a welcoming, encouraging and supportive healthcare setting.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Present teaching information in a clear, concise and logical order to enhance understanding of concepts.
- Demonstrate all exercises, relaxation and breathing techniques as outlined in the course syllabus.
- Encourage class participation and answer questions.
- Endorse and explain the policies of Akron General Medical Center that are pertinent to Childbirth Education.
- Explain the Childbirth Educator's role with various team members (e.g., mother, father or significant other, physician, nurse, etc.).
- Demonstrate understanding of the needs of special groups (e.g., grandparents/siblings/other relatives, the pregnant adolescent, single parents, high risk mothers, adopting parents and parents with communication barriers) and stays consistent with AGMC philosophy and practice in obstetrics.
- Teach a minimum of two Childbirth Preparation Class series a year (e.g., Basic Childbirth Preparation Series, Cesarean Birth Series, Refresher Series, Sibling Preparation Class, Breast Feeding Class, Breast Feeding Support Group or Infant/child CPR).
- Maintain annual mandatory training/competency.
- Participate in patient safety performance improvement activities and education as requested.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited school of Nursing
- Current Ohio licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Two years of clinical Obstetrics experience
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Childbirth Educator Certification in International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA) or Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator (LCCE)
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)
