The Laboratory team at Indian River Hospital is looking for a Blood Bank leader that can support the transfusion needs of a community hospital while fostering the development of scientists that work as generalists to support our patients. In this role, you will supervise Blood Bank personnel in the performance of basic and advanced patient and donor tests including automated and manual test procedures and the interpretation of results to determine donor-recipient compatibility. This position will require technical and personnel supervision along with developing, implementing and overseeing policies, processes and procedures. The ideal candidate will have a passion for blood banking and enjoy collaborating with departments outside of the laboratory to ensure safe, timely transfusion services to our inpatient and outpatient populations.

A caregiver in this position works days from 5:30AM – 2:00PM or 8:00AM – 4:30PM. 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Ensure that all CC, Division and Departmental policies are adhered to and all lab safety procedures are followed. 

  • Develop, implement and oversee policies, processes and procedures for daily operational tasks (e.g., blood product receiving, blood product testing, blood product preparation and issue, daily quality control testing and review, routine patient testing including ABO, Rh testing, antibody screening and cross matching). 

  • Supervise laboratory personnel. 

  • Ensure that patient care needs are being met and address ongoing service issues (e.g., customer complaints). 

  • Track and report blood bank quality metrics. 

  • Coordinate special projects (e.g., new test instruments). 

  • Develop, implement and oversee blood bank employee training and competency evaluation program. 

  • Ensure that all testing personnel working in the blood bank adhere to the Transfusion Medicine Quality Plan. 

  • Work with the regional laboratory manager and Main Campus Blood Bank manager to develop system efficiencies and address integration needs. 

  • Ensure that the laboratory's established policies and procedures are followed whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. 

  • Ensure good documentation practices (e.g., clear and legible records). 

  • Ensure proficiency testing is in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations (e.g., analysis of proficiency survey samples are performed in the same manner as a patient specimens, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting). 

  • Develop and implement corrective action for Proficiency Testing failures. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from a four-year college or university OR meets the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel grandfathering clauses. See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, §493.1489(b)(3), §493.1489(b)(4), §493.1489(b)(5), §493.1491 Standards; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications 

  • Diploma and/or transcripts must be provided 

  • Education outside of the United States requires diploma/transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from by an HHS approved agency or nationally recognized organization such as NACES (National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc) or AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc) 

  • State of Florida supervisor's license in one or all disciplines 

  • Three years of blood banking experience 

  • One year of management experience 

  • Knowledgeable in Quality System Essentials 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification

Physical Requirements:

  • Visual acuity to study specimens under a microscope.

  • The ability to distinguish colors.

  • Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle specimens and lab equipment required to process specimens and repair equipment.

  • May be required to stand for long periods of time.

  • Light lifting may be required.

  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
