A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. This close-knit team is known for their teamwork and collaboration. This team is driven and strives to provide quality patient results daily. A caregiver in this position works days from 3:00AM – 11:30AM or 3:30AM – 12:00PM 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Process all cytology, biopsy, and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas. 

  • Perform immunohisto stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections. 

  • Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (i.e. instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent, or supply depletion.) 

  • Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked. 

  • Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol. 

  • Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed. 

  • Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.  

  • Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups, and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required. 

  • Answer telephones, greet customers, and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians, and nursing staff. 

  • Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Associate’s Degree or Certification from a NACCLS approved Histo-Technology Program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Physical or Biological Science  

  • Current license in the State of Florida at the Histology or Cytology Technologist level  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree with Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)  

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) license 

  • Two years of hospital experience
