As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Pediatric unit at St. Lucie West Medical Center, you will provide top-quality patient care to diverse populations of patients under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, optometrist and/or podiatrist. An LPN in this role is familiar with performing patient care activities, documenting patient care, administering medication, observing patients’ health and maintaining/restocking medical equipment and supplies.

This is a regular PRN position with caregivers working days varying between 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with on-call and rotating Saturday shift requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide accurate medication administration, nursing documentation such as: medical records, authorization forms, laboratory requisitions.

  • Implement pain management assessment and documentation.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of disease process and therapeutics by recognizing changes in patients' status and report pertinent information to Charge Nurse or Physicians.

  • Recognize and follow through with nursing intervention.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of various age-related concerns as observed through appropriate nursing interventions by the Physicians or Charge Nurse and documentation.

  • Utilize opportunity for health teaching of patient, family and others.

  • Utilize appropriate teaching methods related to growth and development and age specific factors evidenced by documentation in the patient's medical record.

  • Participate in the departmental orientation of new employees in a positive manner, share knowledge, experience and provide guidance when assigned.

  • Maintain complete and up-to-date documentation and files at all times.

  • Perform patient teaching as needed under the supervision of RN/Physician.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of an approved school of Practical Nursing  

  • Current Florida license as a Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN) 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of patient care experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good hand-eye coordination, involves extensive standing walking and occasional lifting.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.

  • Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
