The Surgery Center at Akron General Bath Health & Wellness Center provides patients with outpatient surgical options close to home. Our highly skilled surgeons use advanced minimally invasive surgeries to provide the best surgical options for patients. Procedures offered include general surgery, ENT, endoscopy, foot and ankle, gynecology, hand and wrist, hip and knee joint replacements, shoulder, spine, sports medicine and urology. As A Surgeons Assistant ASC on the team, you will provide primary and secondary assistance to the surgeon during operative procedures.
A caregiver in this position works days from 7:30AM – 4:00PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Demonstrate working knowledge of aseptic techniques and the physiological and anatomical aspects of assigned surgical procedures.

Review the patient’s medical chart and associated documentation (e.g. H&P, tests, laboratory findings, x-ray and EKG results and consent forms).
-
Relay pertinent information and contraindicates to the appropriate surgical team members.
-
Functions as a first and/or second assistant during operative procedures.
-
Provide assistance to the operating room team.
-
Position the surgical patient, set up required equipment and prepare surgical skin.
-
Transport patients to and from the surgical pavilion.
-
Provide care to patients in the perioperative area and PACU, as needed.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant program OR completion of the Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) course OR completion of military surgical technology program

Three years of on-the-job surgery training to substitute for formal training as Surgical Assistant or Registered Nurse First Assist

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA)

Physical Requirements:
Have exceptional dexterity and quick response ability. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and ginger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids. Able to safely transport patients on stretchers to bed using good body mechanics. Works extended hours as necessary.
