As Histology Technician, you will perform staining, tissue sectioning, fixation and embedding techniques. Because our Surgical Team awaits this critical information for diagnosis, timely and accurate work is essential. In this role, you can stretch and hone your skills in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving healthcare environment and gain extensive hands-on experience.
A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 3:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Transport prepared tissue specimens to the Histology Laboratory and place them on the automatic tissue processor.
- Process specimens and embed and section embedded specimens using a microtome.
- Perform routine stains, special stains procedures and enzyme histochemistry stains.
- Mount, label and distribute prepared microscope slides to pathologists or to appropriate areas for interpretation.
- Prepare reagents buffers, solutions and stains.
- Replace reagents and perform daily maintenance on processors.
- Perform tests, data entry of patient and specimen information and collect statistics or review patient information through computer programs.
- Maintain cleanliness and quality of assigned instrumentation and equipment.
- Complete and maintain preventative maintenance and troubleshooting records.
- Repair instruments/equipment or initiate requests for instrument/equipment repair or service through vendors or Clinical Engineering.
- Section frozen tissue specimens using the cryostat.
- File surgical and autopsy blocks as required.
- Serve as a resource for students, trainees and residents.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification eligible in the field of Histology
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- One year of experience

Physical Requirements:
- Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens, slides and utilizing instrumentation.
- Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.
- Typical physical demands include ability to sit, stand or walk extensively.
