A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 7:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Attend to patient and family's immediate needs and problems by acknowledging and providing required attention.
- Assist the patient with activities of daily living, including dressing, bathing and maintaining hygiene.
- Carry out nursing orders and report all pertinent information regarding patient's condition to the appropriate nursing staff.
- Interact with the Food and Nutrition Services to maintain an adequate supply of nourishment for the patients.
- Provide patients with hygiene, nutritional needs, ambulation, toileting and linen changes.
- Maintain orderliness and appearance of the unit, order supplies from Central Supply as needed and restock necessary supplies.
- Transport patients on stretchers and beds.
- Document care provided on the medical record as appropriate.
- Interact with the Environmental Department to ensure an adequate supply of clean linen or daily patient care.
- Collect and transport specimens as directed and in accordance with hospital policy.
- Provide RN/LPN with accurate and timely intake/output data, vital signs, blood glucose results and other data as assigned.
- Notes changes from prior measurement and communicates accordingly.
- Respond to call lights within a maximum of FIVE minutes or communicate inability to do so to assure the response target is met and report patient needs to RN/LPN immediately.
- Assist in the removal of equipment (I.e. IV pumps, commodes, PAS) in preparation for room cleaning.
- Conduct EKG and phlebotomy responsibilities when directed.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Graduate of an approved Nursing Assistants Program
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association (AHA) upon or within new hire period
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification
- Hospital training
- Six months of acute care in a hospital setting experience

Physical Requirements:
- Pulling up or repositioning patients in bed, lifting supplies, placing equipment or supports, and pushing beds throughout the hospital
- Bending over to perform certain duties, such as checking chest tube drainage, urine output, etc.
- Maneuvering throughout halls, stairways and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies
- Visual and auditory skills
- Heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety in the event of an emergency
- Ability to visually assess patients and implement plan of care
- Finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination for charting, using equipment and providing direct patient care
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
