Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Unit Clerk provides a high-level of customer service to patients, families, visitors and employees to promote and support the highest level of patient experience. Additionally, this caregiver performs administrative and clerical duties to ensure efficient operational flow in their assigned department. The Neurosciences unit at Cleveland Clinic Akron General is a high-acuity, fast-paced unit, treating patients suffering from strokes, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs), spinal cord injuries and s/p craniotomy following a stay in NSICU. 

 

Caregivers in this role will increase their knowledge of medical systems and can participate in opportunities to improve safety. 

 

A caregiver in this role works 3 p.m. — 11:30 p.m. Additionally, caregivers in this role work every other weekend and work occasional holiday rotations throughout the year. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will: 

  • Conduct an in-person greeting and welcome newly admitted and transferred patients to the unit. 

  • Communicate with and facilitate communication between patients, families, other departments and healthcare team members regarding patient care. 

  • Assist with processing patient admissions, transfers and discharges. 

  • Provide concierge service to assist patients and families with wayfinding and direct them to available resources. 

  • Assemble and maintain patient medical records and other documents related to patient care. 

  • Assist with unit clerical functions. 

  • Assist in trouble-shooting equipment failures such as call system, portable phones, WOWs and other unit devices. 

  • Respond to patient call lights in a manner that expedites appropriate follow-through as needed. 

  • Maintain appropriate level of forms, materials and supplies. 

  • Keep Nursing Station clean and organized, including wiping down counters, phones and keyboards. 

  • Follow Hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, professional appearance and display of ID badge, and safety. 

  • Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 

  • Minimum one year of experience in a customer service-related role 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Microsoft Office experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires frequent data entry, standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  • Requires normal or corrected speech, hearing and vision.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
