As a Surgical Technologist in the Ambulatory Surgery Center’s Operating Room in Coral Springs, you will be involved in patients’ individualized care before, during, and after surgery. You will enhance and develop your skills as an experienced Surgical Technologist in a large variety of ambulatory surgical cases in the 4-suite Operating Room Department, including but not limited to ENT, General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Urology, following established standards, department guidelines and hospital policies and procedures. You will be responsible for maintaining the sterile field and supplying inventory and resources, all while following the guidelines set by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). You will also be cross-trained as a GI Tech, offering the opportunity for you to enhance your skills even further.
A caregiver in this position works days from 6:30AM – 5:00PM.
Coral Springs Family Health Center will be the primary work location, but floating to Weston Hospital will be required, as needed.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Review daily assignments and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia.
-
Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs, considering age, physiological, cultural and physical status.
-
Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures, etc.
-
Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and electrical and environmental safety in department.
-
Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting, side-site verification and other departmental policies and procedures.
-
Remain with the sterile set-up to assure maintenance of the sterile field.
-
Assist with draping, report/correct any break in sterile technique as they occur.
-
Prepare/edit surgeon's preference lists to assure quality care of the surgical patient.
-
Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes, including status of surgical procedure.
-
Assure that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use.
-
Collect specimens as directed by surgeon, identifies origin of each specimen to RN Circulator.
-
Follow standard policy and procedure for specimen collection.

Complete Repair Worksheet on all malfunctioning equipment with proper follow-through.

Demonstrate prudence in par level supplies and utilization.

Serve as a resource individual for a surgical sub-specialty.

Assist surgeon and assistants with retraction and suction as directed.

Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly utilizing universal precautions.

Coordinate with RN Circulator to assure that required equipment and supplies are available prior to patient entry.

Maintain an orderly sterile field keeping accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instrumentation according to policy and procedure.

Display dexterity in the use of surgical instrumentation and knowledge of surgical procedure.

Assist RN Circulator to ensure proper room utilization through decreased turnover time per CPT and scheduled procedural time review.

Assure that all instrumentation is returned to Decontamination with proper documentation count sheets.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
-
Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES
-
OR completion of military surgical technology program
-
OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT))
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Two years of experience in a multi-disciplined OR in an acute care hospital setting

Certified Surgical Technologist
-
One year of experience as a Surgical Technologist

Physical Requirements:
-
Workload is heavy and requires constant lifting, moving of patients, equipment, instrument trays, and supplies.
-
Able to lift items up to 50 pounds without assistance and greater than 50 pounds with assistance.

Stooping, pushing and pulling required when moving patients or equipment into position for surgery.
-
Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the Healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing work load, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities; self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish completion of the daily surgical schedule.
