The Community Registered Dietitian will act as a coordinator to serve the needs of ambulatory clients who are identified as being food insecure by the Hunger Vital Signs™ or designated screening tool and have been referred for services. The dietitian will serve as the coordinator to connect clients with chronic disease who may have limited access to food in their own communities to the hospital’s designated Food Pantry. They will oversee inventory, maintain the Food Pantries, and ensure that it meets all requirements of the hospital and its accreditation bodies and of the Akron Canton or Cleveland Regional Foodbank or any other regional foodbanks for which the hospital serves as a health care partner.
A caregiver in this position will work 7:30am to 4:00pm or 9:30am to 6:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide nutrition education for individuals and groups and evaluates achievement of learning objectives by the client and/or family. Provides appropriate follow up in accordance with the patients' goals, referring patients to outpatient nutrition therapy when a greater need exists. Considers cultural, ethical, and religious values when collaborating with individuals.
- Identify or create educational materials for the Pantry for review by the CHN Education committee for standardized content – about how to cook, shop/read labels and plan meals within a budget, basic nutrition education for overall health and as it is affected by chronic diseases, and food safety, etc. Recipes can be shared based on pantry contents as appropriate. Utilize Nutrition Manager as a resource.
- Assures that care delivered to each client is in accordance with the state practice act and demonstrates accountability for the proper use of patients protected health information.
- Coordinates efforts to provide food for clients working with other healthcare professionals in discharge planning.
- May oversee or consult with additional regional locations and personnel.
- Serve as the subject matter expert regarding food insecurities and chronic disease for their region, representing the health system in the local community.
- Participates in and implements nutrition research studies and communicates findings through reports, abstracts, presentations, and publications.
- Serves as a resource to medical staff and allied health personnel on nutrition issues. Conducts in-services and educational presentations to hospital/department staff. Assists in the education of dietetic students and interns. Plans learning experiences.
- Represents the hospital at community events to educate and advocate regarding food insecurity and its impact on chronic health conditions. Function as a subject matter expert for the facility.
- Promotes donations of food and funds for the pantry based on pantry needs utilizing internal communications tools and external ones within guidelines from Marketing.
- Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, task forces or projects, and participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned.
- Develops and maintains a working relationship with the Akron Canton or Cleveland Regional Foodbank management team, offices referring clients to the pantry, and community resources utilized by the Pantry.
- Oversees all daily functions of the hospital pantry and any associated sub-pantries by personnel supervision, maintaining food safety, record keeping, maintaining, and managing stock, and distributing appropriate nutrition materials. Utilizes the Fresh Track intake system.
- Manages reporting, tracking, and sharing of relevant information with appropriate groups.
- Coordinate opportunities to return to this pantry through communications regarding transportation options (bus passes, future visits to campus, hours of operation) and potential assistance with bagging groceries and transporting to client’s vehicles as needed.
- Replenish inventory by placing orders with Foodbank using Primarius ordering system and coordinate community and internal donations of food. Track status of orders and coordinate deliveries from Foodbank to pantry site, then deliver to any approved off-site locations.
- Coordinate and/or supervise a team of support staff and volunteers for assistance with basic pantry function and upkeep.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor of Science or master's degree in dietetics, food and nutrition or related area, from an accredited college.
- Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
- Active certification as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
- Current license in the State of employment as a Licensed Dietitian (LD).
- Must complete Foodbank orientation and Fresh Track training session.
- Current Serv Safe training or complete at start of position.
- Some placements in role may require a valid state driver’s license.
- Minimum of three years of experience in customer relations with diverse patient/culture populations.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Experience as a dietician
Physical Requirements:
- Will need to walk, sit, stand, stoop, and bend for varied times while on duty.
- Will need to lift to 40 pounds and unload boxes of food.
- Drive to Food Bank and other associated pantries on occasion.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
Pay Range
Minimum Annual Salary: $47,530.00
Maximum Annual Salary: $72,475.00
The pay range displayed on this job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education. The pay range displayed does not include any applicable pay practices (e.g., shift differentials, overtime, etc.).
