A Histologist is proficient in and responsible for accessioning and processing all tissue, surgical specimens, foreign bodies, orthopedic devices, and other specimens removed during surgery. Your work helps to provide a timely and accurate processing of patient specimens to support diagnosis and treatment for a variety of situations. This high-performing team is known for their teamwork, collaboration, and excellent turnaround time. A caregiver in this position works 20-25 hours per week, Monday-Friday, from 12:00PM – 5:00PM.
Martin North Hospital will be the primary work location, but floating to Martin South and Tradition Hospitals will be required, as needed.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Process all cytology, biopsy and aspirate specimens received from other patient care areas.

Perform immunocytochemical stains and assist the pathologist in processing tissue for immediate frozen sections.

Arrange for submission of various tissue and gynecological specimens, which include thin preps and prepared smears to reference laboratories.

Report pertinent information to the pathologist, patient care area, or supervisor (e.g., instrument malfunctions, delay in testing, reagent or supply depletion).

Maintain cleanliness of work areas and keep work areas organized and stocked.

Follow safety procedures and utilize all safety devices and personal protective equipment per protocol.

Follow procedures and refer to procedure manuals for proper instructions when needed.

Be proficient in operating instrumentation and equipment and follow trouble-shooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.

Ensure instrument operations and results are reliable and perform maintenance checks, startups and/or shutdowns as assigned or as required.

Answer telephones, greet customers and provide consults and technical support to the pathologists, physicians and nursing staff.

Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

High School Diploma or GED

Current license in the State of Florida at the Histology or Cytology Technologist level
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Associate’s Degree or higher from a NACCLS approved Histotechnology program OR a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the Chemical or Biological Sciences

Histotechnologist (HTL) Certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Two years of hospital experience

Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $38.80
