Hearing screening post-birth is the gold standard of care across the United States, as initial treatment of hearing loss can prevent future speech and language challenges. As a Newborn Hearing Screener, you will autonomously offer all newborns and infants this essential task before they leave Fairview Hospital. In this role, you can make a difference in the lives of both babies and their families, offering parents peace of mind and expert guidance.
This is a PRN role. A caregiver in this position works varying shifts between 7:00am and 12:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform pre-testing procedures, including safe transport of newborns, proper placement of sensor tabs and transducer of sound under the direction of the Hearing Screening Coordinator and/or the Department Supervisor.
- Ensure proper equipment function and troubleshooting, reporting issues as necessary.
- Calm and comfort baby while performing tests.
- Monitor noise in environment and adjust/modify/control to reduce noise levels when necessary.
- Independently perform hearing screening on all newborns and infants prior to their discharge in accordance with Ohio Department of Health rules and facility protocol via Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) and/or Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR).
- Communicate the results of the screening(s) and follow up (if needed) to the patients' family in a confidential, culturally, and linguistically appropriate manner.
- Provide test results and answer questions after extensive training by the Audiologist.
- Provide written documentation of results in accordance with the law to caregivers and primary care providers within appropriate timelines.
- Document required information such as quality assurance activities.
- Follow policies and procedures regarding baby care within the work environment.
- Escalate issues to the appropriate clinical function.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma/GED and one year of experience in a hospital setting or working with infants OR Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in an allied health field
- Minimum one year of experience in a hospital setting or working with infants
Physical Requirements
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
- Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
Personal Protective Equipment
- Appropriately follows universal hand washing procedures.
- Performs all required infection control in accordance with current policies.
Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $20.00
Maximum hourly: $20.00
