As a Surgical Nurse Clinician for Plastic Surgery, you will apply knowledge of nursing theory and disease processes to deliver professional nursing care to patients. In this role, you will participate in patient care conferences and grand rounds, support discharge planning and serve as a liaison between surgical and medical staff.
A caregiver in this role works days from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Assess patients’ condition and needs, taking into consideration growth and developmental level of the patient and age-related factors such as physiological, sensory, tactile, auditory, visual, body image perception and emotional changes.

Utilize a thorough systematic process and appropriate skills in documenting patients' history and pertinent clinical information.
-
Demonstrate good judgment and acceptable nursing practice as based upon patient/family needs identified during patient visit.
-
Evaluate patient care outcomes to see results of progress and collaborate with team members in evaluating and recommending other courses of action.
-
Utilize opportunities for health teaching of patient/significant other by utilizing the appropriate teaching methods, encouraging use of available resources related to age specific factors.

Establish priorities, assess workload and determine order of importance on a consistent basis.
-
Collaborate with the physician and assist with writing orders, scheduling tests, assisting with procedures.
-
Follow up on physician's reports and/or recommendations with patient and/or family.
-
Administer or assist the physician with special treatments and procedures as required.
-
Develop and initiate research protocols in association with the physician.
-
Act as a liaison for the patient who is participating in a research study.

Organize and record study data.

Participate in the presentation of clinical findings, in patient care conferences, grand rounds and/or other educational programs.

Perform preoperative patient assessments and teaching for patient and family.
-
Assist in scheduling surgical procedures and workups as outlined by the supervising physician.

Act as liaison between surgical and medical staff, consulting services, other hospital departments and the patient and family.

Assist in discharge planning.
-
Prepare documentation for physicians and verify that all post op appointments are correct and reviewed with patient.

Communicate any deviation from normal clinical progress to physician for evaluation.

Document daily nursing progress notes in a clear, concise, logical order as outlined by supervising physician.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Knowledge of infection control practices
-
Knowledge of nursing theory, diseases and therapeutics and is able to recognize changes in patient status, report pertinent information to physicians, nurses, charge nurses and intervene appropriately as situations occur.

Current State Registered Professional Nurse License (RN)
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
-
Two years of operating room or procedural experience

Physical Requirements:

Essential Duties: This position requires knowledge of all aspects of patient care including assessing; planning, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating the patients progress through the entire continuum of care. Work is heavy, constant lifting and moving patients, carrying equipment, supplies and material up to 50 pounds without help and over 50 pounds with the help of mechanical devices or other personnel. Stooping, pushing and pulling when moving patient or equipment into position for treatment. Reaching for, handling, feeling and manipulation of equipment into position.

Physical Duties: This position requires frequent walking, sitting, and standing. Frequent talking and listening when giving instructions and explanations. Frequent use of the phone; fax machines, and occasional use of the computer.

Working Conditions: The majority of time the employee spends indoors in air-conditioned areas. Potential for exposure to blood and blood borne pathogens is significant. Clinical exposure to patients requires the use of personal protective equipment. Local travel with own transportation required. Work in retracted surgical area at times-temperature between 60-70 degrees.

This position requires high exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and bodily fluids that mandate the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles as appropriate.
