An EMG Technologist is a specialized healthcare professional who performs electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) to assess muscle and nerve function, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions like neuropathy or ALS. In this role, you will learn to perform EMG examinations on patients of all ages and keep equipment in clean operating condition. A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 8:00AM – 5:00PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Operate the nerve conduction instrumentation.

Ensure proper adjustments are made for accurate recording procedures.

Select nerves to be studied by reviewing requests and patient history.

Prepare patients for EMG examination.
-
Record all pertinent test data at each stage of study.

Instruct in the use of instrumentation, technique of electrode application, nerve stimulation measurements and possible causes of error.

Relate procedure to the referring diagnosis, check results of nerve conductions performed by others and teach data interpretation.

Maintain clean linen for each patient and clean EMG/QPN rooms, electrodes and equipment.

Ensure order and cleanliness of general laboratory areas.

Replenish supplies.
-
Ensure maintenance of equipment and instrumentation in EMG and QPN labs and EMG exam rooms.

Keep accurate log of all patients in EMG and QPN lab.

Assist caregivers with financial tickets, reports and chart flow.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
-
Associate's Degree from an accredited END program OR a minimum of two years of college with some human anatomy and physiology
-
Registered Nerve Conduction Technologist – R NCS T certification from the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET)
-
Two years of experience as a Non-Registered EMG Technician at CCF or a comparable laboratory
-
Working knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology and science sufficient to assist with the interpretation of test results and train non-registered technicians

Knowledge of all EMG techniques to perform research, demonstrations and evaluate procedures
Physical Requirements:

Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to assist with positioning and transporting patients, i.e., pushing beds, carts and wheelchairs.

Requires the ability to maneuver equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.

Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
-
Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
