Climbing the Career Ladder in Environmental Services
Bogdan Denisyuk, Environmental Services Supervisor at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, is the embodiment of the term “rising star.” Bogdan has been with Cleveland Clinic for nearly eight years, but in the space of 16 months, he rose in the Environmental Services department from Area Cleaner to Lead Worker to Supervisor. He’s one of many caregivers whose hard work and dedication have helped him move up the career ladder at Cleveland Clinic.
In all of those positions, Bogdan’s priorities and goals have been the same: making sure that hospital rooms are cleaned in a timely order, “so that patients’ experience here is comfortable when they are the most vulnerable,” as he puts it.
The road to supervisor
Bogdan was an Area Cleaner for about 6 1/2 years when he was promoted to Lead Worker. As he continued his career journey, his duties and responsibilities evolved, as did his understanding of the day-to-day operations of a hospital — especially in the face of the pandemic.
“When the COVID pandemic started, things got crazy, and I started to offer more of myself to help out when and where things were needed,” he says.
Support from Cleveland Clinic
At first, Bogdan wasn’t sure he was ready for the promotions, especially so quickly. “I actually rejected the offer twice because I did not believe in myself at the time. But they kept giving me more duties and responsibilities, until I was working at the at the level that the lead works at. So I was trained to be in the lead position, even though I didn’t know I was being trained for it!”
And then, six months ago, Bogdan moved into the Supervisor role. “A lot of people were hoping that I would become supervisor,” he says.
The potential for growth
Another thing Bogdan learned, about the Supervisor position and about himself, is that self-confidence and belief in one’s talents and abilities go a long way in building a career. “Cleveland Clinic has shown me that I can do things that I didn’t think I was capable of. My supervisors and co-workers showed me that with hard work and the right mindset, you can grow here.”
Bogdan’s advice for those looking to move up is very simple and direct. “Provide the example that you want others to follow,” he says.
“Push yourself and don’t be afraid to show who you are to other people — not just in your department, but to other departments, as well. In time, you will grow and develop into the right fit for advancement.”
Onward and upward
Now that Bogdan has reached the role of Supervisor, he is looking to continue his career at Cleveland Clinic, this time on the clinical side. He has started taking classes at Cuyahoga Community College toward a goal of becoming a radiologic technologist. Again, he credits his leaders and fellow caregivers at Cleveland Clinic with supporting his goals and aspirations and enabling him to advance his career.
