Under the direct supervision of the Manager, the Phlebotomist obtains and prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests. The Phlebotomist maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients’ families, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel.

Position Requirements

  • Collect blood from patients, provides quality laboratory specimens and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients following established standards and practices.
  • Coordinates the collection of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
  • Maintains daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Answers telephone calls: reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries; records requests for blood collections; answers general questions concerning test orders and collection; takes messages or routes calls.
  • May require the performance of a variety of non-technical and clerical duties in the Laboratory or other areas.
  • This position will spend half of the day in Jackson Urgent Care and the other half in the Outpaitient Lab at Mercy 

Essential Functions

  • Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and stool for laboratory testing.
  • Checks the test requisition or computer label against the nursing station log to assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Bring discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel for correction.
  • Verifies positive patient identification. Initials, dates, and times all collections for specimens collected. Performs screening tests and reports results.
  • Performs venipunctures using the aseptic technique in accordance with department procedures. Observes hospital isolation procedures.
  • Performs quality-control tests according to the department procedures and testing schedule. Records the results in the quality-control log; initials and dates the log.
  • Accessions and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Admits patients into the system if necessary and enters test results. Labels specimens with computer labels. Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
  • Prepares test order forms and records entries in the reference laboratory log. Prepares specimens aliquots for dispatch according to specimen requirements.
  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
  • Runs the computer worklist to ensure that all orders have been processed.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move 30 to 40lbs to stock supplies and move or support patients.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Educational, Licensure, & Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or the equivalent required.
  • Certificate from an approved phlebotomy education program required.
  • Phlebotomy technician, PBT (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Previous hospital phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • BLS through American Heart Association (AHA) required.
