Summary: Monitors and cares for the health and well-being of animals housed in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU).
Job Responsibilities: Performs daily health observations and monitors the condition of research animals. Administers medical treatments to animals as prescribed. Assists investigators by performing special techniques or procedures. Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures. Ensures that areas used for technical procedures are well maintained and adequately supplied. Transports supplies, equipment, and animals to and from various locations. Other duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or GED. Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.
Experience: Minimum of one year of experience, AALAS certification or demonstrated equivalent experience in the custodial care of animals.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: American Association of Laboratory Animal Science AALAS) certification preferred.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent standing, bending and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, sights, animal bites and scratches. May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.
