Summary: Provides general assistance to the Coding Center and other end users of the 3M HIM System; provides ongoing maintenance and support of the 3M HIM System; and is responsible for training, problem resolution and evaluation of all project requests generated for the system; provides analytical and technical assistance during the implementation and maintenance of system; assists in optimizing the quality and cost effectiveness of the system.
Responsibilities: 3M HIM System Maintenance: Provides ongoing system support, corrects problems and develops or requests enhancements as specific needs are identified,develops and maintains documentation of all software and system development archives and interfaces. Follows up on any system related issues, including interface issues. 3M HIM System Reporting: Develops ad hoc reports for HIS, Administration, Finance, Medical Staff.Develops standard (periodic) reports for hospital departments and distributes them on a regular basis in a timely fashion. 3M HIM and coding training/auditing: trains staff in the use of 3M/HIM system. Provides coding and abstraction training to staff, as well as ongoing quality audits as requested.Codes and abstract charts as necessary; assigns the correct ICD-9-CM and CPT code(s) to each diagnosis and operative procedure substantiated by documentation contained in the medical record.Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Completion of a 4-year college curriculum In Health Information Management or a 2-year college curriculum in Health Information Technology meeting accreditation standards and holding a valid registration or accreditation with the American Health Information Management Association and/or CCS credential.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Accreditation with the American Health Information Management Association and/or other professional coding organizations.
COMPLEXITY OF WORK: Must be capable of cooperating with fellow personnel in a team effort to accomplish hospital and departmental objectives.Must have a working knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT-4, UHDDS sequencing, and DRG/APC reimbursement schemes. Must be able to maintain good working relations and communication with medical staff, nursing, administration and other departments.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Five years of previous experience in a similar capacity. Must have experience in the operation of a personal computer with a good working knowledge of the Operating System (OS), software packages, and an understanding of network structure.Must be able to use a telephone effectively and receive or transmit messages clearly and accurately.Must be able to learn specialized software functions
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Extensive use of a PC which requires normal or corrected visual acuity, dexterity sufficient to use a PC keyboard, requires sitting for extended periods of time. Extensive use of a phone which requires normal or corrected hearing ability. Must be able to verbally communicate and explain complex information to patients and Doctors. Some heavy lifting is required in order to accept and ship out packages.
